Can anyone wear red?

"There is a shade of red for every woman." - Audrey Hepburn.

Thank all of you that have sent in your style questions. Keep them coming! This week I'm going to answer one that I hear often, "Can I wear red?"  My answer is YES! I know not every woman will be comfortable in a red dress or suit. For these girls, a red lip or tank under a jacket is enough. Anything that can give a pop of color; a scarf, vest, even an earring, will add excitement and energy to an outfit. The trick is finding the perfect shade of red for your coloring. People with warm undertones in their skin need to wear a tomato red. Those with cool undertones look best in a true red, the color of a "Red Delicious" apple. The difference between the two shades may be slight but can make or break a look. With my coloring, for example, a true or dark red can bring out dark circles and any splotchiness on my face. A warm red, on the other hand, can bring a rosy tint to my cheeks and create a glow in my complexion. If you aren't sure if you look better in cool or warm colors, just look at your lips. Are they pink or peach without lip color? You can also turn your wrist over; is your skin a peach tint or pink? Can you wear corals and orange hues? If so, most likely you should wear warm reds. If you like true pinks, cool blue, lavender (think of the colors of a Monet painting), then most likely you have a cool skin tone and should wear the true "blue-based" reds.

As far as makeup goes when wearing red, you can either do a strong eye and choose a light colored lipstick or gloss or do a red lip and natural eye with black eyeliner. If you wear too little makeup, people will just notice the dress, instead of the woman WEARING the dress! Shoes can be black, nude or leopard print.

WHY WEAR RED? Red is a power color; it sends the message that you are independent, energetic and passionate. It makes a statement. It creates a VISUAL IMPACT.  If you choose the correct shade for you, it will work better than blush to bring color to your cheeks. In the cold winter months ahead, wearing red will lift your spirits, and brighten skin that hasn't seen the sun in months. The question is truly, "Why NOT wear red?!"

"Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin, that, or a kick-ass red lipstick".                  - Gwyneth Paltrow
