ROCK STAR: THE BLACK TURTLENECK

There are few pieces of clothing that are more iconic that the black turtleneck. After going to the exhibit, "Is Fashion Modern?", at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC recently, it struck me how there are some things that can cross the decades and remain current and chic. For example, the same turtleneck worn by Audrey Hepburn many years ago would look just as glamorous today.

A sleeveless black turtleneck can be worn alone or as a first layer. This piece of clothing can serve as the starting point, similar to the background of  a painting. What you choose to add (a necklace, scarf, Moto jacket, blazer, long cardigan...the possibilities are endless), will show your distinct personality.  When worn alone, the contrast between skin and the black of the top creates a dramatic effect. Either way you create a statement look!

Simply add leggings or jeans to an oversized black turtleneck, and add tall boots or booties for a very European, elegant but casual look.

This season many designers and brands are adding embellishments (pearls, feathers, sequins, etc.) to the black turtleneck. It is such an easy way to get creative. The black turtleneck becomes a true statement piece. I have several that I plan on wearing this holiday season!

If you do not already have this VERY IMPORTANT piece in your closet, add it now! If you are not comfortable wearing turtlenecks, or feel that your neck is not long enough, go for a cowl neck that forms a scoop at the neckline. I have a black turtleneck sleeveless tee, a long sleeve thin black turtleneck for layering, an oversized black sweater that is unbelievably comfortable, and several embellished turtlenecks. I travel so often for work (and play), and as I look in the closet now (I'm working in NYC after working in D.C. last week, I have the sleeveless turtleneck, the oversized, and two embellished turtlenecks for special events, exhibition openings and dinners I am attending. Last night I was invited to Bergdorf's to hear Linda Fargo, the women's fashion director, talk about what's trending now, and then left there to go to the opening of a new exhibit at the Whitney. What did I wear? An embellished black turtleneck of course!

As always, I must mention the FUNCTIONALITY of this piece of clothing. It can be as casual as you want, with track pants or jeans and sneakers, or can be worn with a pencil skirt,  pumps and sparkly gems for a dressy evening. Any way you wear it, it will create a fashion forward look.

Below I have included some shoppable examples of what is in my closet and a few others. Enjoy!
